The Fixed – telephone Network
During the period of 2000-2005 the Public Telecoms Corporation PTC Launched
a very big investment in the outside – plants of Optical fibres. It has
accomplished an increase in the length of optical fibre cables to reach in general
(12000km) (78%). These cables link the major & minor areas inside Yemen
and the fixed-telephone network covers (85%) of the Yemeni Governorates. This
coverage has taken into consideration to provide phone-calls traffic and data-transmission
network via various channels (Rings). In additions, the Intelligent network
has been founded in order to keep pace with the most up to date developments
in the field of telecoms and info technologies.
The subscription to this service has witnessed a remarkable increase. The total
number of the subscriber was only (346,000) in year 2000 whereas it reached
(860,000) till Sep,2005 (i.e. 150% increase). Based on this fact, the phone
density jumped from (1.9%) to (4.3%) and it is expected to reach (4.5%) by the
end of year 2005.
Meanwhile, the phone-prepared capacity was only (459,000) phone lines in year
2000 whereas the capacity was (1,205,000) till mid-Sep,2005 and that came of
the increase of Centrals (switchings) from (118) to (276).
On the other hand, at the beginning of 1990s, the public-phone-service centres
spread all over Yemen. Such centres, established by small investors & Licensed
by the Yemeni Telecoms Authorities, reached about (8845) by mid-2005 and operated
about (53,070) lines (i.e. with an average of 6 lines per centre).
Domestic & international phone & Fax call services have been provided
for the public by these centres which represent one of the most important projects
of phone services as they are considered as an economic and financial source
whose benefits are of both its owners & employees
